We have a short-term AND a long-term opportunity in
Cape Town City Bowl.
The short-term role is to cover the role described below as a short-term in-house position with
immediate effect for +- a month until we have the right long-term person in place for the one-year contract role described below.
We’re seeking a self-driven candidate to input and implement the social media engagement strategy, tactics, deployment and analysis for Cape Union Mart’s outdoor and gearhead social media communities.
This ‘gear-head’ role focuses on the adventurous active and outdoorsy lifestyle of the following two brands: https://
www.capeunionmart.co.za and
http://www.kway.co.za/about/ with a primary focus on building brand love and fostering engagement within and beyond these communities. We're looking for someone who loves and lives the outdoors and nature, is equally able to manage corporate retail culture, and brings solid social media experience and confident, outspoken opinions to a fabulous and dynamic team.
This is a
one-year contract position with The Content Studio. The selected candidate will work in active collaboration with the digital, PR, merchandise and customer care team at Cape Union Mart HQ in Cape Town city centre. The role currently offers hybrid ways of working partly in the office and partly remote. You’ll be able to tap the Cape Union Mart culture and work with an exciting team as collaborative partners.
The purpose of this social media coordinator role is to have a specialist in place to create and implement strategies and rollouts to actively and innovatively drive organic social conversation and interactions with Cape Union Mart and K-Way’s social media communities on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

“You are the 'social' in our social media team. You're full-heartedly engaged in devising and implementing innovative strategies and content to build loyal and engaged communities on social channels. As the person closest to our communities on social channels, you prioritise research and analysis of the community and of the platforms. You are the go-to analyst of social engagement. You're an avid researcher of our communities and social media channels, sharing and making strategic use of these insights. You're the boss of the social media calendar, ideating inspired engagement strategies and creating and briefing content that pulls the right social levers on the right channels for the best of the brand. You schedule and deploy all social media content, ensuring the sales content dovetails strategically with community-building content.”
The role includes, but is not limited to:- Input and implementation towards the social media strategy.
- Keeping up to date on any relevant platform developments and innovations (e.g. launch of new platforms or platform updates, AI opportunities, etc.)
- Conducting brand and community research, analysis and reporting.
- Driving the conceptualistion and development of the monthly and weekly content calendars.
- Deploying content across all social media channels.
- Mapping out engagement content and briefing content into the creative studio.
- Distilling and sharing community insights with key stakeholders within the group (e.g merchandise, e-commerce and brand teams)
- Ideating and managing digitally-led competitions.
The right candidate is proactive, proud, takes initiative, collaborates, applies research insights and critical thinking, enjoys sharing and applying acquired information, and loves to spark and engage in social media conversation.
You are detail-orientated, committed, reliable, organised, enthusiastic and curious. You have the longer-term resilience that a social media career requires, so patience, diligence, commitment and responsibility are core characteristics.
Applicants must be willing to commit to the full length of the annual contract. Working hours are 8am-5pm and overtime may be required where necessary.
Experience, qualifications and competencies - Relevant bachelor's degree or diploma
- Proven work experience and references within the social media field.
- Retail experience as well as proficiency in using Sprout Social is advantageous.
- Domain knowledge in retail, online advertising, and e-commerce with a strong affinity to the Cape Union Mart Brand.
- Flexible and adaptable – must enjoy working in a fast-paced and at times challenging environment.
