Record earnings for Sappi despite challenging year
Commenting on the group's results, Sappi chief executive officer Steve Binnie said: "I am very pleased with Sappi's exceptional performance this past year. Once again, the dedication and resilience of the Sappi team shone through, this year delivering EBITDA of $1,339m, well above the previous record set in FY2000 ($1,052m). The outstanding performance was particularly noteworthy within the context of a challenging macroeconomic environment. Significant headwinds included extreme weather-related events, lingering Covid pandemic effects in China as well as extraordinary global inflation, which was triggered by geopolitical turmoil and ongoing global supply chain disruptions. Helping rural women to cultivate 'good food for all'
As an anchor tenant in the rural space in Southern Africa, Sappi is acutely aware of the crucial role that rural women play in the agricultural labour force. With around 4,000 rural women employed directly or indirectly by Sappi Forests nationwide, the company provides decent work at equitable rates to its own and contractor employees. Enviro champs and eco rangers doing their bit for World Water Day
When the community members of Nzinga requested assistance with the clearing of alien vegetation to improve access for their livestock for grazing purposes, the Sappi-WWF partnership saw this as a great fit for the work being done in the uMkhomazi catchment to improve water security in the area. Sappi collaborates with WWF-SA for water security
Sappi has entered into a Water Stewardship agreement with WWF-SA (World Wide Fund for Nature South Africa), aimed at improving the water security in the uMkhomazi catchment area.
